From the very first sentence of Frank Creed’s speculative fiction adventure, Flashpoint,
the reader is hurled into a futuristic world involving the supreme battle between good
and evil. What makes the story of Flashpoint so intense and poignant, is the realization
that the drama unfolding before our eyes is neither one of science fiction, nor of
fantasy, but one that could very easily be a reality in our near future. And as if to
impress this very truth upon us, Mr. Creed, begins his novel with a timeline from the
1980’s up until the year 2036, listing events gone by and probable happenings in the
future that have led to a time when Christians are considered terrorists and the One
State rules over all.
This fast-paced story begins with two children, David and Jen, being tearfully ejected
from their family car. Terrified and confused, they hide under a bridge as they watch
their Dad speed away, knowing he and the rest of their family will be captured and sent
to government Rehab centers. Why? Because they have all been discovered to be
“Fundis”, Outlaw fundamental Christians. Within minutes, government “peacekeepers”
track the children down and are about to capture them when a mysterious man wearing
shades and an oilskin duster strolls onto the scene. Legacy is a cross between King David
from the Bible and Neo from the Matrix. Handsome, strong and witty, he is a man of
God, supercharged with Holy Spirit power which he uses to quickly make mincemeat of
the peacekeepers and rescue the kids.
And all this happened in just the first two chapters. Mr. Creed had me hooked. From
there, Legacy escorts the kids to one of the Christian underground cells where they
meet other Fundi members and soon discover what it really means to take up your cross
and follow Jesus. Though still fledglings in their faith, David and Jen build upon the
biblical foundation laid by their parents and through a techno-process of instant
Reformation, they soon have their spiritual eyes pried wide open. Their minds now hold
vast amounts of knowledge, their senses are fine-tuned in all realms, and they have skills
they never dreamed of. Afterward they are given new names: Calamity Kid and e-girl.
Calamity and e-girl grow in their faith and use their skills and the power of the Spirit to
overcome the evil forces around them. During a daring raid, Legacy is missing in action
and Calamity Kid finds himself the new leader of the cell. His exceptional spiritual gifts,
knowledge, and power make him a formidable warrior, and he soon makes number one
on the One State’s top ten terrorist list. Recruiting several other saints, he plans an
impossible mission to rescue his parents from the Rehab center where they are being
held and reprogrammed.
I love the way Mr. Creed takes scriptural truths and makes them come to life. In the
Bible, Christians are told we are all a part of the Body of Christ. In Flashpoint we see that
concept worked out as the Fundis bond together, finding their place in the group and
using their talents and skills to defeat the enemy. Walking in the Spirit takes on a whole
new meaning as we watch Calamity Kid converse with “The boss” and allow the Sprit to
reveal truths to him moment by moment. Mr. Creed opens our eyes to the spiritual world
around us which the Bible declares is the true and eternal reality. Angels appear like
glittering light and demons like dark shadows hovering over people. As Calamity grows in
his walk, he is even able to see a person’s spirit, transforming an otherwise attractive
person into a heinous monster and an average person into a glowing beauty.
Flashpoint is jam-packed with spiritual truths, and with Creed’s unique style of writing,
combined with his geeky knowledge of techno-babble, and incredible kung-fu style fight
scenes, the story will certainly keep your head spinning. I highly recommend this book
for anyone interested in end-times speculative fiction.
